Have you ever made something just because it felt like a scream that you’ve been waiting too long to release? Hidden In The Spotlight is my scream, releasing years of internalized homophobia, frustration at an unjust world, and a call to all the angsty underdogs to continue fighting for their dreams. 

I’ll never forget the first time I walked down the steps of Dupont Underground. It was dark, rough, and cold. Yet, there was a life and vibrancy coursing beneath the city’s surface. When Victor told me he was creating a theater company in such a harsh environment, I was dazzled by his sheer ambition. 

What started out as a story of a theater company quickly turned into an intimate conversation on resistance, sacrifice, and joy. Over roughly 30 hours of footage and four months of filming, I captured not only Victor’s story but also the story of a community coming together to celebrate their shared love of theater, honor their Latine cultures, and build community and solidarity.

Making a movie in a tunnel 20 feet underground was no easy feat. This film challenged me and healed me. It allowed me to tap into the creative parts of myself I thought I had left in the past. I enjoyed working with the natural low-light environment, allowing me to play with shadow and reflection work to create a visual landscape that captures the intimacy and uniqueness of my story. 

This film could not have been done without the community of La Pluma, the support of Dupont Underground, the support of all the people who helped me schlep my stuff around, and all those who mentored and supported me throughout this process. I am so grateful and beyond thankful. I hope Hidden In The Spotlight inspires you to let out that long-held scream and create art that tells your own story.
